Super Bowl. WOW!

The Giants won the Super Bowl. I’m sorry, can you say that again? Yes The NY Giants beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 42! I can’t believe it.Nobody picked them to win. No one gave them a chance. Everyone thought they were a good team and might put up a fight against the Pats, but nobody ever thought they would really win. I mean, in the regular season they had 10 wins and 6 losses. That’s a good season, but they just made it into the playoffs. For the most part, they just didn’t look like a team that could get very deep into the playoffs.

No one thought they would beat

Tampa

Bay. Then no one thought they would beat

Dallas. Everyone was sure the cold weather up in

Green Bay
would do them in. Up until yesterday, that was the best football game I had ever seen with the Giants winning in overtime, in minus 4 degree weather.

Myself and every other Giant fan I know have been saying for the last two weeks; “can you believe the G-Men are in the Super Bowl” It’s crazy. Now we are going to say; “can you believe the G-Men won the Super Bowl!”

It’s weird; I watched every Giants game this year. They played OK, some games they really did well. Some games they really stunk up the place. And other games they just did enough to get by and win. But even after the last game against The Patriots, which was awesome, you never really thought they would get this far. The Patriots were supposed to win the Super Bowl this year. They had one more game to win to make it the perfect season. The Pats are considered to be one of the, if not the best football teams in NFL history. And if not the Pats, well then The Dallas Cowboys surely can do it. They were the number 1 seed in the NFC. Or the Packers with Bret Farve the old gun slinger can win the big one. But not the Giants. They have been playing with house money ever since week 16.

My point is this; what are we (Giants fans) supposed to feel? When your team is great and they are predicted to win, it still feels great, but you expected it. They played great all year long. It’s no surprise. But when your team is the 5th seed in the playoffs and none of the talking heads think they have a chance, and your playing an undefeated monster of a football team, you go into it hoping they at least make a game of it and not get blown out.

So how do I feel now? Shock. It’s like a dream. A very good dream indeed.

Super Sunday

The New York Giants and the New England Patriots will play in Super Bowl 42 this Sunday. This game has many subplots to it. The Pats perfect season, the Giants coming out of nowhere, Tom Brady and the super model, Eli Manning coming of age, and his brother Peyton winning the game last year. Bill Belicheck vs. Tom Coughlin. Both were assistant coaches with the Giants during their 1986 and 1990 Super Bowl winning seasons. It’s intense, it’s awesome.

This will be a historic game. Either the Pats will achieve the perfect season, winning 19 straight games which has never been done before. Or the Giants will pull of one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports. Not the number one upset, but defiantly one of the top 5. This is going to be fun. One way or another it should be a good game, with a story book ending. A great way to end the NFL season. Lets enjoy it.

Championship Sunday!

Today is the big day. Championship Sunday. Can the Pats stay undefeated and beat the San Diego Chargers? I think yes.The real big game this Sunday is the Giants vs the Packers in very cold

Green Bay. I think the Giants can do it. They are on a roll right now. They are playing well on the road, and Eli Manning has regained his confidence.

My predictions: Giants 20 Green Bay 10 New England 30 San Diego 7

NY Giants off to the NFC Championship game!

The New York Giants are going to the NFC Championship game! Unbelievable. They beat The Dallas Cowboys in

Dallas 21 to 17. If you would have told me that in week 10, I would have said you were nuts. Eli Manning has come of age. Gone are the “seat of his pants” throws. He is on his game and the rest of the team has rallied behind him. The game was a nail biter, but the

New York
defense held up.

Now it’s on to

Green Bay. The Packers will be tough. Bret Favre had a great game yesterday vs. the Seahawks. Lets hope the weather hold out.

It’s really hard to believe that if the Giants win one more game, they will be in the Super Bowl

Eli Manning, leave him be.

Well, Sundays Giants game against the Vikings was not a very good one for Giants or Eli Manning. After reading the paper and listening to the local sports radio, you would think Manning should be hung. I don’t feel this is true. Sure Eli had a bad game, but so did the rest of the team. They were also missing their 2 starting running backs Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward. They were both out with injuries.  This put all the pressure on Eli. Also, on the first play on the game, the Giants kicking off, the ball went out of bounds, and they were off sides. I knew right there that it was going to be a bad day for the Giants.

Did Eli have a bad day? Yes. Should he be hung out to dry? No, not just yet. Lets give him another chance to right the ship .Maybe the coaching staff should do a better job.

Is the rest of the world ready for the NFL

Today the New York Giants play the Miami Dolphins in the first regular season (American) football game on foreign soil. Sounds cool huh? Well, yes and no. I am a big Giants fan. I also have many friends who live in

England. When I first heard the news about the game, I was going to make plans to go to the game. I emailed my English mates and told them of the news, and how my wife and I might cross the pond to see the game and make a vacation out of it as well. They were excited that I might be coming over to see them, but not all that interested in the game. Which did not surprise me.

 I live in

New Jersey and have been to many a football game at Giants Stadium. Both Jets, and Giants. So I thought it would be cool to see the Giants play in

London. But as I got more details on idea, it did not add up. First there was the cost. With the airline flight, game tickets, and hotel we were pushing north of $2,000 each. Not including food and other incidentals. Then of course there is the time of year . It’s late October. That’s a busy time of year for most of us Americans. Kids are in school, the holidays are around the corner, and so on. In the end we decided not to go.

This all got me thinking: what is the NFL doing here anyway? As I have been reading about the game this week, it seems that the NFL is trying to branch out to a global market. By putting a regular season game in

London, they are sure to see a much more competitive game than the other exhibition games that have been played there before. And for sure the Giants and Dolphins will put on a much better show than the Euro- NFL has ever had. Even though the Dolphins are 0-7, they should put up a decent fight.

Even still, does the NFL really think it can expand into

Europe some how? I here the NFL is looking into doing this more next year. They are scouting

Germany and

Mexico for locations. There is even talk of having a Super Bowl in another country.
I understand what they are trying to do: Get more money in the end. Reach the rest of the world with the power of the NFL, and its huge marketing and merchandizing arm. Sell more jerseys, hats, and everything else that comes with an NFL logo on it. Imaging walking down the Champs-Élysées and seeing a Frenchman in a Pittsburgh Steelers cap, instead of a beret.  There are a few reasons I don’t think this approach will work: First the home team fans. Instead of getting to see your team play 8 home games, now you will only get 7. But you still have to pay for the pre season tickets. The home team will lose its home team advantage. If you want to go to the game, you can, but get your wallet ready, and clear your calendar for a few days. In spreading the NFL word, they are putting out the long time local football fans, which are as loyal as you can get. Also, it’s a huge distraction for the teams themselves. The time difference, the routines the teams have. It’s all being disrupted. Second, I have been to

Europe and guess what; they don’t really like American football. The big sport over there is soccer. (But don’t call it soccer or you will get quite a stare). They also have

Rugby, which is close to football. But as we all know is not really the same. I watched a bit when I was over there and I still don’t get the rules, or understand why the do certain things that they do. They are very passionate about their sports. Just as we are if not more passionate. But they are hot wired for futball, rugby, and oh yes, cricket. It’s going to be a hard sell. When I was over there I tried my hardest to convince them of the virtues of the NFL. But they just can’t get past the helmets and pads. I told them they need the pads. “Just look at how hard they hit each other”. And just like I don’t understand the rules of rugby and cricket, they can’t follow the rules of football.

What the NFL should really do is have an NFL, or football network over there. It could include college games as well. Pick out the best games of the week, and show them. Come on, who would not be riveted to the Colts vs. the Patriots? Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady. The Cowboys vs. the Giants. Manning vs. Romo The pre game shows could be geared for people who don’t understand the rules. Explain the rules, and the rivalry’s. I think in time they would get it. Just like we all did.  Then you can start bringing games over there. Who knows, maybe in time the NFL could become international. Imagine the Super Bowl being the Chicago Bears vs. the South Hampton Centurions.   But for now, we will watch the game at home on the telly. Make some fish and chips, and every time the Giants score a touchdown I will have my wife bring me a pint.
